Large diameter SSAW steel Pipe
Product Overview
SSAW (Spiral Submerged Arc Welded) steel pipe is manufactured by continuously forming hot-rolled steel coils into a spiral shape and welding the seam using double-sided submerged arc welding technology. The spiral forming process allows large-diameter pipes to be produced from narrower steel strips by adjusting the forming angle—a key advantage over straight seam welding methods.
SSAW pipes are available in a wide range of sizes, typically from 219mm to over 3000mm in outer diameter, and are manufactured to international standards such as API 5L and ASTM A252. They are commonly used for oil and gas transmission, water pipelines, structural applications, and foundation piling projects.
Material Grades
SSAW spiral welded pipes are available in multiple material grades to suit various application needs:
Carbon Steel Grades:
● Q235B (ASTM A36 / S235JR / St37.2 equivalent)
● Q345B (S355JR / St52.3 equivalent)
● 16Mn, 20#, 40#, 60#
API 5L Line Pipe Grades:
Grade B, X42, X46, X52, X60, X65, X70, X80
Stainless Steel Grades:
Cr13, 1Cr17, 00Cr19Ni11, 1Cr18Ni9, 0Cr18Ni11Nb
Sieze Range:
Outside Diameter:219mm - 3000mm
Wall Thickness:5mm - 22mm (SCH40, SCH80, SCH160)
Length:5.8m / 6m / 12m or customized
Manufacturing Standards
SSAW pipes are produced in accordance with internationally recognized standards:
API 5L (American Petroleum Institute)
● Specifies requirements for pipeline transportation systems in oil and gas industries
● Available in PSL1 and PSL2 product specification levels
ASTM A252 (American Society for Testing and Materials)
● Covers nominal wall cylindrical steel pipe piles
● Used as permanent load-carrying members or shells for cast-in-place concrete piles
Other applicable standards may be specified depending on the intended application and regional requirements.
Surface Coating
SSAW spiral welded pipes can be supplied with various surface coatings to meet different environmental and application requirements:
1. 3LPE (3-Layer Polyethylene) Coating:
● Three-layer system consisting of fusion-bonded epoxy primer, adhesive layer, and polyethylene topcoat
● Provides excellent corrosion resistance
● Ideal for pipelines installed in harsh environments
2. FBE (Fusion-Bonded Epoxy) Coating:
● Thermosetting epoxy powder fused to the pipe surface
● Offers good chemical resistance
● Suitable for both above-ground and underground applications
3. Hot-Dip Galvanizing:
● Pipe immersed in a bath of molten zinc
● Forms a metallurgical bond with the steel substrate
● Creates a durable, corrosion-resistant zinc coating
● Provides excellent rust protection for both interior and exterior surfaces
Quality Control & Packaging
Inspection and Quality Control
SSAW spiral welded pipes undergo rigorous inspection procedures to ensure compliance with international standards:
Dimensional Inspection: Each pipe is verified for outer diameter, wall thickness, straightness, and length accuracy against specified requirements.
Mechanical Testing: Samples are tested for tensile strength, yield strength, elongation percentage, and impact toughness to confirm material properties meet applicable standards.
Non-Destructive Testing:
● Ultrasonic Testing (UT): Scans the weld seam to detect internal defects such as lack of fusion or cracks
● Hydrostatic Testing: Every pipe is pressure-tested to verify integrity and ensure leak-free performance under operating conditions
